Chapter Forty-Six: The Twinkie Part

"So what are we gonna do first?" Zac asked, trying to break the tension in the room.

"I rented 'Excess Baggage'," Meredith said. "You guys want to watch it?"

"Is that the one-?" Isaac began.

"Me and Ike have already seen it," Nicole said quietly. Then she looked up at Taylor, who was blushing. "But it was good; we can watch it again."

"O....kay," Meredith said. They all consented to watch it, and arranged themselves across the room. Sarah sat down beside her sister on one couch, and Taylor and Nicole sat on the other. Zac and Meredith sprawled on their stomachs in front of the TV, and Isaac sat down on the floor in behind them.

Nicole tried to act nonchalant, but she couldn't help being nervous. This was bad; and she had a feeling that something was going to happen. She hated that feeling, because it was never good. The last time she had this feeling, Tay fell off of a freaking cliff. She shuddered at the thought.

"You okay?" Taylor asked from beside her. She nodded.

"Yeah," she lied. "I was just thinking."

" 'Bout what?" he asked.

"Oh, nothing," she said. "I just got a bad feeling."

"Probably from the Ice Queen over there," Taylor whispered, gesturing toward Leslie. Leslie suddenly brought her gaze from the television and met Nicole's eyes. The icy stare that she gave Nicole gave her chills.

"What's her problem?" Nicole whispered. "Did you see how she looked at me?"

"Mmmhmm," Taylor muttered. "I take it she didn't get a good first impression of you."

"Apparently not," Nicole said.

"So this movie is good?" he asked, changing the subject.

"Yeah," she said simply, looking away. She couldn't bring herself to tell Tay that she and Ike hardly watched it in the theater. Not after everything that had already been said.

Nicole wasn't the only one who sensed something wrong; Taylor did too. The movie was about halfway over, but she was still sitting tensely by his side. He knew that Meredith's cousin was being weird, but something told him that it was deeper than that. He just wished that she'd open up and tell him what was going on.

He put his arm around her shoulder, and was happy to feel her lean closer to him. He turned her face towards him and kissed her softly, but she returned it without much feeling. He sighed and slowly leaned back, weaving his fingers behind his head.

Nicole must have noticed that he was upset, because she gently took one of his hands and squeezed it. He felt a little bit better, and they watched the rest of the movie without any other problems.

"Oh, that was sweet," Meredith sighed as the final scene of the movie faded and the credits began to roll. She turned and smiled at Zac, who was busy laughing at the movie.

"What was that guy smoking?" he asked, rolling over onto his back as Sarah switched on the lights.

"Crack, definitely," Isaac said, joining in on the joke. "I got a twinkie in the car," he said, impersonating Benicio del Toro. Zac, Taylor, and Nicole laughed at his perfect impersonation.

"Come on guys!" Meredith said for the sake of the movie. "It was sweet!"

"Yeah, but that dude was hilarious!" Zac said.

"Okay, okay, I have to admit," Meredith said. "When he said that 'Twinkie' line, it was pretty funny." She realized who hadn't joined the conversation and looked over at her cousins. Sarah was intently listening to the conversation but saying nothing, as always. She was much too shy. But Leslie was never quiet, like she was now. Meredith knew something was up.
