Chapter Twenty-Four: Coming Home

"It seems like all we do is come and see you up here," Isaac told Nicole the next day, "but if that's true, then why do I miss you so much?"

"I'm going to be moving back to Tulsa in three weeks," Nicole told him as the two embraced.

Nicole couldn't help but wonder what her life would be like after she moved back to Tulsa. Sure, it would be the same old town with her same old friends and same old everything. But she would be living in a different home, and making new decisions that would not only affect her life, but affect Isaac and Taylor's lives also. And she knew that either way, someone was going to get hurt.

Isaac, Taylor, and Zac went home later that day, leaving Nicole alone to analyze their situation what seemed like the millionth time in the past few months. She felt bad about everything, but what she regretted the most was the wall that she had allowed to be built between herself and Taylor. They used to be so close that they could finish each other's sentences, but now Nicole found herself being truly surprized at some of the things that Taylor said, such as his constant fights with Isaac. And she also couldn't stand the fact that she hadn't had a serious conversation with Isaac about their relationship since Taylor's confession three months earlier.

"Nicole honey," her mother said, stepping into the room, "I brought home some more big boxes from the grocery store. You need to start packing everything that you want to take to our new home in Tulsa with you. Leave all of your furniture and linens here, because we're going to buy new things for your new room. All of your old furniture and sheets and everything will stay here just in case you ever come to stay down here."

"So what's going to happen when we move back to Tulsa mom?' Nicole asked. "With your jobs and everything."

"Well, you're moving home indefinitely," her mother explained. "Your father and I will live here during the week, and come home every weekend. Matt is going to check on you, as usual, during the week."

"Where's our new house at?" Nicole asked. "Far from our old one?"

"Actually," her mom said with a grin, "it's right behind the Hansons' house. Mr. and Mrs. Greene moved to Texas, so we bought their house. It's not as big as our old house, since we have this house too, but we thought you would be perfectly happy with it. Right?"

"Mom!" Nicole cried. "That's awesome! So when am I moving back to Tulsa?"

"How fast can you pack?" her mother asked with a grin. Nicole excitedly gave her mom a hug before running down the stairs to grab some boxes.

"Hello?" Zac Hanson said the day after Christmas morning, answering the ringng telephone. It had rang six times before Zac decided that no one else was going to bother to pick it up.

"Zac!" Nicole cried over the line. "I didn't think that anyone was going to pick up!"

"Sorry, 'bout that," Zac said sheepishly. "I'm beginning to think that I'm the only person here. Except for Tay - he's still in the bed."

"Well, I guess you'll be the first one to hear my news!" Nicole said happily. Zac was instantly curious.

"What news?" he asked excitedly.

"Well, what happened six months ago next Monday?" Nicole asked.

"You moved to Muskogee!" Zac said said sadly. "Hold on," he said suddenly. "Six months?"

"Exactly six months," Nicole said.

"Nic, please don't be joking," Zac pleaded before asking his indefinite question. "Are you coming home?"

"Yeah!" Nicole said, and Zac followed with a couple bursts of 'yes!', 'all right!' and pumping his fist in the air.

"You're coming home on Monday?" Zac asked.

"Yes," Nicole said. "I'm already packed!"

"Awesome," Zac said. Then something occurred to him. "But Nic, where are you going to live? You house got sold to some old people."

"Well, let me see," Nicole said. "I have the address right here." As she read the address to him, she wished she could see his reaction.

"But Nic," Zac said confusedly, "that's the Greene's house. Well, it used to be. But they just sold it......"

"Mmm hmm," Nicole said, still waiting for him to grasp what she had said. And then he did.

"You're going to live behind us!" Zac cried. "The Greene's sold their house to you!" Zac couldn't believe how great this was.

"Zac, what are you shrieking for?" Taylor asked, coming up behind him. Taylor had just woken up, and he was a wreck. Wearing only his plaid boxers and a gray tee shirt, his face was red from where he had slept on it, and his hair was a mess.

"She's coming home!" Zac cried. "Nic's moving into the Greene's house on Monday!"

"What?" Taylor asked confusedly. "Zac, you better be telling the truth!"

"Ask her yourself!" Zac said, handing the phone to his older brother.

"Nic?" Taylor asked.

"Hey Tay," Nicole said. "Did Zac tell you?"

"You're coming home on Monday?" Taylor asked, and went on without an answer, "And you're living in the Greene's house?"

"You got it," Nicole said happily. She couldn't wait to get back and see them.

"Oh my god, Nic this is so awesome!" Taylor cried. Then she heard a click as Zac picked up the other extension.

"Hey again," he said. "This is perfect Nicole."

"I know!" Nicole said. "I want to come back right now! So where is everyone anyways?

"Ike's at a guitar lesson, and mom and dad took the kids to see a movie and have lunch, according to this note," Taylor said, picking up a Post-It note from the kitchen table.

"So, did you guys have a good Christmas?" Nicole asked.

"The best," Zac said, and then went through a list of what everyone got for Christmas. "Plus we got clean clothes and plenty of sleep!" Zac said, and Nicole knew he wasn't joking about their lack of the things most people take for granted. Their musical career was probably the best thing that had ever happened to them, but it was probably also the most stressful and tiring.

The three chatted on for a while before Zac decided that he wanted to go out and explore the Greene's house and yard for Nicole.

"I'll see ya Monday, okay?" Zac said.

"Not if I see you first," Nicole cracked. "Bye Zac."

"Bye Nic!" Zac said, followed by a click and his singing in the background of Taylor's phone as he ran around getting dressed.

"It's going to be great having you back in Tulsa," Taylor whispered.

"I know," Nicole said. "I missed everything so much."

"I missed YOU so much," Taylor said.

"So how are you doing?" Nicole asked, thinking about Tay's health the last time she had seen him.

"Better, I think," Taylor said. "I was probably just exhausted from travelling. We never really got time to get over any of our jet lag, and I guess it hit me the hardest.

"I hope that's all it is," Nicole said worriedly.

"Nic, I'm fine," Taylor said. "I'll be even better when you get back."

"I can't wait," Nicole said. "Well, I better go. Christen wants me to go to the mall with her one last time before I leave."

"Okay," Taylor said. "I'll call you Sunday, if I don't talk to you before then. Okay?"

"Okay," Nicole said. "Bye."

"Bye," Taylor said.
