Chapter Fifty: Promise

“I’m going to stay in here in case he gets pissed again,” Isaac said.

“No you aren’t,” Nicole said, pushing him towards the door. “I can handle Taylor.”

“You’re sure?” Isaac asked.

“Sure,” she said. She followed Isaac back out to the living room where Taylor was. He was still there, joined by Sarah, Leslie, Zac, and Meredith. They were all on couches but he was sprawled in the middle of the floor on his stomach, holding an icepack on his busted lip.

“Tay?” she said tentatively. Isaac went to the kitchen to clean himself up.

“My turn?” Taylor asked sarcastically, but smiled at her to let her know that he had calmed down.

“Yeah,” she said, putting her arm around his shoulder. She was surprised when he jerked away.

“You smell like Ike,” he said, stopping just outside Meredith’s door. “He covers himself in that cologne.”

“Come on Tay,” Nicole said, the smile disappearing from her face. They went into the room and sat down on the bed, Nicole in her same place and Taylor in Isaac’s. She didn’t know if she could do this.

“So what did you guys talk about?” Taylor asked, lying back on the bed as she had before. How could they be so similar?

“You,” Nicole said. “And me. Mostly us. We....I think we were wrong Taylor.”

“About what?” he asked, sitting up and facing her.

“About us, about love, and about everything else,” Nicole explained. “We’re best friends Taylor. And you’re a guy, and I’m a girl. It’s not common for a guy and a girl to be best friends and be as close as we are. There are so many ways that we could be together. But as a couple just isn’t one of them. I mean, in a way it’s like we’ve been going out for our whole lives. We were always together, and we always told each other everything. It was perfect. But then we decided to take it to this whole new level, and everything got completely screwed.”

“Oh man,” Taylor said. “I didn’t even.....Nic, I messed everything up.”

“No you didn’t,” Nicole argued. “This was bound to happen sooner or later Tay. We had to find out.”

“But I made you feel horrible,” Taylor said, “and I made you think it was your fault that I was feeling so bad. And I tore you and Ike apart.”

“Tay, all of that is over. Everything has a way of working itself out, and this will too.”

“So that’s why you smell like Isaac, huh?” Taylor asked, a sad grin spreading across his face. “That’s already working itself out.”

“Yeah,” Nicole said. “I guess so.”

“I’m going to miss you Nic,” Taylor said, running his fingers through her hair.

“Why?” she asked. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“Yeah, but nothing’s going to be the same. We’ll go back to being friends, and Isaac will get to have all of the stuff I love about you. He’ll be able to kiss you, and hold you, and tell you how much he loves you. I’m going to miss that.”

Nicole slowly put her hand along the side of Taylor’s cheek, rubbing it gently. She leaned forward and kissed him innocently, one last time. They broke apart and embraced, her tears soaking his shoulder. When she pulled back and looked at him, his eyes were flooded with tears too. “I’ll always love you Nicole,” he whispered.

“I know,” she said, kissing his forehead and pulling him up from the bed. “You have to promise me something Taylor.”

“Anything,” he breathed, wiping the tears from her face.

“Promise me that no matter what happens, no matter what life throws at you, you’ll always remember me. Promise that you know I’m here for you always, and promise that you’ll never forget what a perfect bond we have.”

Taylor allowed the tears filling his eyes to spill over then, cascading in rivers down his perfect face. “I promise,” he whispered.

Fly with the wings of an eagle
glide along with the wind
no matter how high
I’ll be thinking of you the whole time

You’ll be on my mind
I’ll be Thinking Of You the whole time.....
