Chapter Forty-Four: Never

"I can't wait for the party," Isaac said to Nicole. They were on the airplane coming home from the Kid's Choice Awards. "We need something to help us calm down."

"I know," Nicole said from her seat beside Taylor, behind Ike and Zac. Tay and Zac were completely worn out and had been napping for the whole plane trip so far.

"So who all's coming?" he asked.

"Well, Zac and Meredith talked about it and decided that instead of the big party we planned, we'd have a simple one with you three, me, Meredith, and.....her cousin. And a few other people."

"Oh no," Isaac said, rolling his eyes comically. "Not another cousin." She giggled, knowing that he was referring to their trouble with Catie.

"I'm hoping that Meredith's cousin won't be a conniving, back-stabbing liar," Nicole said, shuddering at the thought of a carbon-copy of her horrible cousin.

"So what do we know about her?" Isaac asked.

"Well," Nicole hesitated, not wanting to spoil the surprise, "she's sixteen, and she's from Oklahoma City. Meredith says that she's really nice and-"

Isaac looked over the seat at her, his stare quizzical. She knew she'd been caught. "Nic, what are you guy's up to?"

"Nothing," she said as innocently as possible.

"Nothing?" Isaac asked, searching her eyes. "Let's see....it'll be you and Taylor, Meredith and Zac, and Meredith's cousin with....hmm, who's left?" he asked sarcastically.

"Come on Ike," Nicole said. She really didn't want to be having this conversation with him. "You can at least get to know the girl."

"Ugh," Ike said, rubbing his face in his palms. "I don't want to do this. I don't want to hook up with another girl; not right now." He paused and looked down, thinking that he had said too much.

Nicole leaned back and stared out the window at the tiny town below. She wanted to say something to ease the tension between herself and Isaac. But no sooner than this thought crossed her mind, Taylor stirred beside her. He shifted in his seat until he was facing her, and looked up at her lovingly.

"Hi," he said, a sleepy grin spreading across his face.

"Hey," Nicole replied, trying to ease the anxiety in her voice.

"What's wrong?" he asked, sitting up and putting his hand on top of hers.

"Oh, um, nothing," she said. "We've got a problem though."

"What?" he asked.

"Ike doesn't want to be set up with Meredith's cousin."

"Oh man," he said. "That could be a problem, yeah. Why'd you tell him anyway?"

"I didn't," she told him. "He's not stupid Tay; he figured it out himself.

"I like to think that I'm actually pretty smart," Isaac said, peering over the seat once more.

"Please Ike?" Taylor asked. "Just hang out with the girl for one night. It's not going to kill you."

Isaac rolled his eyes and bit his lip, going over the situation once more. "One night?" he asked, defeated.

"One night," Taylor stated. "That's all. And then everything will return to normal again, and you can go back to your life."

Isaac agreed, and the problem seemed solved. But little did any of them know that after this party, nothing would ever be the same.
